A Sydney court has heard releasing a document that helped a woman overturn her conviction for a false police complaint would invade her privacy.

Carnita Matthews is seeking legal costs after winning an appeal against her conviction for falsely claiming an officer tried to lift her burka during a traffic stop.

The 47-year-old's conviction for making a false statement was quashed because the District Court judge said there were doubts about who had signed and delivered the written complaint.

He also said there were differences between the signatures on the complaint and Ms Matthews' driver's licence.

A Sydney newspaper has applied for the document to be released, with a lawyer for the outlet telling the court this morning it is in the interest of open justice.

But Ms Matthews' lawyer told the court releasing the document would be an unacceptable invasion of his client's privacy.
